Treatment Overview.

Laminectomy creates space in your spinal canal relieving the pressure on the spinal cord. Patients suffering from arthritis develop bony outgrowth known as bone spurs within their spinal canal which creates compression. This is common in arthritis patients and grows with age.

During the surgery, the doctors may also eliminate the bone spurs for creating space. The surgery is also known as decompression surgery and is recommended only when physical therapies or less invasive methods of treatments do not work.

Eligibility For Treatment.

The doctors will diagnose you for your treatment and you will be an eligible candidate for laminectomy if you experience-

  • Mild to severe back pain

  • Difficulty in standing or walking or weakening of legs.

  • Low control of bowel or bladder.

Preparation Before Treatment.

  • If you are suggested to go through a laminectomy, the doctor will give you a list of instructions that you will need to follow before the surgery. 

  • You will be required to fast before a few hours of the surgery.

  • You must share your allergies to certain drugs with your doctor.

  • You are advised to share your ongoing medications with your doctor as some changes can be made to the doses till the surgery is done and well-healed.

About Treatment.

  • You will be put under general anesthesia before the surgery and hence you will be unconscious.

  • An incision will be made in the middle of your back or neck depending on your condition. The size of the incision also depends upon the same.

  • minimally invasive surgery can also be performed if the condition is not severe.

  • The surgeon will remove the required lamina to create space and other procedures like spine fusion for slipped or curved disks or discectomy can also be carried out if needed.

  • After the procedure is done sutures will be placed and the medical team will cover the incision with a bandage.

Post-Treatment Care Treatment.

  • Depending on your condition, you will be asked to stay at the hospital. Some patients can be discharged on the same day of the surgery.

  • You will be asked to undergo physical therapy as it will help you to increase your strength and flexibility.

  • You can return to your job in a few weeks if it doesn't require a lot of lifting or bending.

  • You should increase your activities over time.

  • Schedule follow-up treatments for better recovery.

  • It may not completely relieve the pain in all patients and hence continuous care is required.
