Laminectomy creates space in your spinal canal relieving the pressure on the spinal cord. Patients suffering from arthritis develop bony outgrowth known as bone spurs within their spinal canal which creates compression. This is common in arthritis patients and grows with age.
During the surgery, the doctors may also eliminate the bone spurs for creating space. The surgery is also known as decompression surgery and is recommended only when physical therapies or less invasive methods of treatments do not work.
